Digital Music Trends – Indefinite hiatus

It’s hard to believe it has been a full year since the last Digital Music Trends show. As some of you may already know, the show is on an indefinite hiatus but I thought I’d finally make it official on the website.

Digital Music Trends ran for six years (2009-2016), producing over 500 shows and interviews with all kinds of music industry professionals and the occasional artist.

DMT shows received over half a million downloads over the past six years, 115,000 plays on SoundCloud and is closing in on 100k views on YouTube.

Unfortunately, putting together a big best-of has proven unrealistic, considering the hundreds of hours of material that I produced over six years, it would have taken 4 months of full-time work to get something worth watching together! However, the website will remain live, and the shows will remain available on the feeds, YouTube and SoundCloud for the foreseeable future. So feel free to dig in anytime you like. I have the feeling that this treasure trove of interviews may prove interesting in a few year’s time – things have already changed a lot in 12 months.

If you’ve just come across the site via Google or word of mouth, there’s still a lot of great content to consume, however browsing the episodes on YouTube may provide you with a better experience as you look for the ‘most viewed’ shows and some of the events I’ve covered over the years.

If you’ve been a fan/supporter/guest on the show for years, thanks so much for your support, couldn’t have kept going without you!

Will there ever be more content coming your way? Well, I’d like to say never say never.

Andrea

It was a real pleasure to welcome Emily White (Whitesmith Entertainment ) and Glenn Peoples (Billboard) to the last weekly recording of Digital Music Trends. If you’d like to be kept up to date with any one-off show recordings do sign up to the newsletter on bit.ly/dmtlist

We start by chatting about the demise of Grooveshark under the weight years of controversies and lawsuits as well as the closure of Simfy, the first streaming service to open in Germany back in 2008.

The week we also had a flurry of Apple news to discuss as rumors around the company’s music streaming service continue to pour in, will it launch in June? Does Apple have the licenses it needs? And what about this DOJ investigation?

Finally we address Instagram’s launch of the @music content vertical, the future of Twitter and Live Nation’s majority stake in Bonnaroo.

I really hope you enjoy this week’s show, have a fantastic week and ’till next time!

This week it was a pleasure to welcome Sophie Goossens (lawyer at August & Debouzy) and Darren Hemmings (founder of Motive Unknown) to the show.

On this penultimate instalment of our weekly appointments we start by chatting about a DMT all-time-favourite topic: Pandora’s quest for profitability and we also mention the latest CRB rate-setting procedures.

In other news, another round of Tidal-ness as we talk about Jay-Z’s tweets and wonder: should the company just stop with the hollow PR talk and come back in a couple of months with a more substantial plan?

We also discuss the EU Copyright Directive and the Digital Single Market initiative as PoliticoEU leaked some of the talking points of the upcoming announcement on the matter.

Finally we chat about live music subscriptions startup Jukely, as the company closes an $8m round and is set to expand to more cities.

I really hope you enjoy this week’s show, have a fantastic week and ’till next time!
