I went through and read Paul’s piece and found it isniretteng to say the least.I think I can sum up his view by stating that the recorded music industry is in trouble, it is the fault of pirates, and that ISP’s and other smart folks like Apple and Google should be working on ways to fix it.Your counterpoint is certainly fair and balanced to use a popular Fox TV phrase.Earlier today (after watching part of Old School last night)I wanted to listen to Metallica’s Master of Puppets so I went straight to YouTube, where I found 5 or more different live versions of the song (not sure whether any of them up there are legal). BTW: the song and the live versions are just awesome and I think I own maybe 4 different versions of the song as a fan. YouTube has versions of just about any song I want to hear and in most cases many versions. They’ve done away with the need to pirate and in most cases have done it with the tacit or overt support of the labels and the artists. and that includes U2 (check out the sheer number of versions of One by U2)Technology is a funny thing it can either help or hurt.You never heard the recorded music industry complain that the radio business didn’t send them a check every time they played a song because it was free advertising. Now they aren’t selling music so they want a fee.The music guys then wanted to shut down the pirate music sites but now they are giving away the music on Vevo with the same model as radio only with a rev share.Paul speaks of a music tax on ISP’s and subscription all you can eat services but as you point out the licensing for these services has made it impossible for consumers to get what they really want. When the industry comes up with a plan that lets me have an all you can eat plan for $5 and a company can make $ off of that then give me a call otherwise it is pretty clear that $10 on a computer and $15 on mobile per month will not cut it with consumers. Rhapsody’s lack of success is a clear indication of that.Rather than complaining, and looking for others to solve the problem the music industry should do 2 things: First, they should get back to putting out great albums as opposed to 1 single and 9 filler songs. Strangely, U2 get this most of their albums are good from front to back but they grew up in that culture and they happen to be massively talented. Most of the new acts don’t get this and haven’t been encouraged by producers and record execs to wait till they get it right. Look at the fight Pink Floyd is putting up over singles versus albums (I would argue they have more perfect albums than anyone from Meddle all the way through to the Final Cut not a bad track in there)Second, the industry should look to truly partner with new digital firms to grow their business. Pandora has over 50M registered users in the U.S., and can’t get reasonable deals done with the labels. Spotify can’t launch in the U.S. because labels are so worried about cannibalizing their existing physical business so they only open it up in markets where they have no more physical business. Want a track on demand service? Sorry that is $15 per month if you want it on the iPhone. So much easier to troll through YouTube.
