DMT 208: YouTube/Merlin, Spotify reacts to Swift, MTV Trax, Kobalt on transparency, SoundCloud

This week on Digital Music Trends it was a real pleasure to welcome Jessie Scoullar (@WicksteedWorks) and Matthew Hawn (@jukevox).

Although we recorded a few hours before the announcement of YouTube Music Key (that’s one for next week) we do cover YouTube’s deal Merlin and ponder whether that may convince more indies to jump on board.

We obviously have to chat about the other big story which is Taylor Swift’s stance on streaming and Daniel Ek’s response on the Spotify blog.

During the show we also cover the launch of the MTV Trax app as a partnership between MTV and MusicQbed, Kobalt’s CEO talking about transparency, SoundCloud’s deal with Warner, the BMI reassuring Pandora that the major publishers will stay on as clients, SoundHound’s redesigned app, the new Composed classical music streaming service, Amanda Palmer’s “The Art of Asking” and much more…

I really hope you enjoy this episode, have a fantastic week and ’till next time!

Subscribe to DMT’s weekly newsletter http://bit.ly/dmtlist

This week DMT was recorded in front of a live audience at the Great Escape Festival in Brighton. During the show we alternate the week’s news stories with discussions around the main subjects being tackled at the conference. I’m joined on stage by Chris Carey (Media Insight Consulting), Fred Bolza (Sony Music), Cliff Fluet (Lewis Silkin, Eleven) and Andy Malt (CMU).

We chat about YouTube royalties and Kobalt’s ProKlaim platform, the future of direct to fan, tv and music streaming, Bloom.fm looking for a buyer, AT&T irumoured to be selling Muve Music, Pandora’s new promoted stations, Rhapsody investing in Dubset, the future of the global recorded industry, Charles Caldas on breakage and Sean Combs’ plans with Revolt.tv.

I really hope you enjoy the show, hopefully I’ll get the chance to record more live shows at events this year, it was fun!

Have a fantastic week and ’till next time
